We know that children learn through their five senses and they certainly learn best when they can touch, see, smell, taste, hear, and manipulate the materials in their world .

As they grow, children’s senses are their most familiar and most basic way to explore and process new information. Sensory play enhances learning through hands-on activities that stimulate the child’s senses.

The well known educator Maria Montessori believed that sensorial experiences began at birth. Through his senses, the child studies his environment. Through this study, the child then begins to understand his environment. The child, to Montessori, is a “sensorial explorer”.

  • Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks.

What is Social and Emotional Learning?

“Social and emotional learning (SEL) involves the processes through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is based on the understanding that the best learning emerges in context of supportive relationships that make learning challenging, engaging and meaningful”.The collaborative for Academic, social,and emotional Learning.
